Mitsuki Miyawaki (born Mitsuki Laycock; September 27, 1990), known as Mitski, is an American singer and songwriter.
After releasing her first two albums, indie rock artist Mitski quickly gained popularity due to the melancholy tone of her music, which pulled at the heartstrings of listeners. After releasing her album "Be the Cowboy" in 2018, Upon its release, Be the Cowboy received widespread acclaim from music critics, who later ranked it among the best albums of 2018. It was preceded by the singles "Geyser", "Nobody", and "Two Slow Dancers". Be the Cowboy was Mitski's first album to chart on the Billboard 200, and also entered the charts in Canada, Ireland, and the United Kingdom.For Be the Cowboy, Mitski was inspired by "the image of someone alone on a stage, singing solo with a single spotlight trained on them in an otherwise dark room."

Mitski has won many different awards thoughout her music career, even before it had started. Since her debut in 2012 Mitski has accumulated 2 awards from 13 nominations, including winning Music Video of the Year for Nobody and being nominated for Album of the Year and Best Rock Album for Be The Cowboy at the Libera Awards in 2019.In 2022 she won the AIM Independent Music Award for Best Live Performer. In 2023 she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song for her song This Is a Life (with Son Lux and David Byrne) for the Everything Everywhere All at Once soundtrack. Later that same year she was nominated for Best New Artist by the Gold Derby Awards and Laurel Hell was nominated for Best Alternative Rock Record and Creative Packaging at the Libera Awards.
Personal Life
Mitski describes her cross-cultural identity as "half Japanese, half American but not fully either", a feeling that is often reflected in her music, which occasionally discusses issues of belonging. Mitski has expressed discomfort with calling herself "Japanese American" or "Japanese", and although she has described herself as "Asian American", she would rather "just say she's American". Since 2020, Mitski has resided in Nashville, Tennessee. She enjoys vegan baking, likes horror films, and has two pet cats.Mitski seems to perceive her life in terms of a conscious trade-off: she presents herself to the public so that she can make a living making music,Mitski often stresses that although she is a young woman who writes emotionally saturated songs, they do not pour out of her like diary entries.
